Tutorials for the next couple of weeks

I hope you all had a relaxing half term!  Please make sure you sign up for a tutorial over the next few weeks- if you want more than one please feel free to sign up again.

Make sure you bring some evidence of work to your tutorial- the more I have to look at, the more help I can give you.  I have my laptop with me so if you want to put things on a memory stick we can upload it, or alternatively put it on your google site.

Google site help: tutorial is also an opportunity to get some technical help so make sure you remember your log-in details!

Artist Research for Week 5

Last week I asked you to do some artist research in four groups.  I gave you some post cards as starting points.  Come prepared next sessions with:


  1. A brief outline of what the artist does (in your own words),
  2. Identify what type of soundscape the artist create,
  3. Outline any cross-overs with the other disciplines we have looked at in sessions,
  4. An example of their work.

Last week I asked you to go and choose a site that was inspirational or special to you.  I then asked you to work in pairs to 'be creative' and respond to the site.  You could use video, recorded sound, live recording, photographs etc the possibilities are endless!

Bring in evidence of your experiments to the next sessions.  BUT don't forget to come equipped with a reason why you chose that site.

My Musical Journey - Expressed Through Imagery


I chose to use this image as it says a lot about my journey to become the musician I am today. The microphone resembles my main instrument, it expresses my passion and love for singing. The lyrics in the background shows how I react to musical situations, for example I was never classically trained as well as not having much knowledge on how to read music, as a result of this I would use lyrics and my ears to work out the arrangements of tracks. My iPad cover which reads 'KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON' is a representation of what I have to keep telling myself through my college course. Due to the fact that a lot of it was heavily theory based and most people being well knowledgeable of it I felt like an outcast at times as well as feeling like I did not have a clue what I was doing or that I wasn't a 'true' musician. By composing myself (excuse the pun) I was able to learn a great deal that I am now happily confident with.

I chose this picture, I'm not sure that's too creative, but I like this one so much! I love recording like in a proffesional studio! It's my piece of art, my first money i spent for proffesional studio microphone.. When I've got my microphone I started recording.I love home recording, I feel the most comfortable then.. I have really big fun sometimes! This pic reminds me myself as a musician, it helped me a lot. That's why I chose this maybe not creative pic.

Week 2 PowerPoint: Autobiography

Music Opens Doors

I chose to create my piece using photos of my own experience of music. This is because music opened doors to a variety of different things for me and this is why I wish to teach music in the future because I want to open those doors for others. This varied from making decisions, meeting new people, sharing with family and friends and the ability to experiment. I added physical paper doors because it was to represent the doors that music has opened for me and the circle is there because I have had it through my entire life.

My Creative Piece

Scott Handy - Ensemble

I have chosen this ensemble as my creative piece due to the fact that the two people assisting me on the recording inspired my playing and singing. David Marletta, who played the Piano, taught me how beautiful an instrument the piano is and how well it can be played. Carole King, a classically trained opera singer, was my vocal coach and friend for a few years. This recording was a part of my GCSE Music Exam and was a piece by Engelbert Humperdinck, which he wrote it for the opera "Hansel and Gretel." It was a fantastic piece to learn and was performed to a number of students. This was to ensure I was confident enough to sing it for the recording.


For my creative piece, I decided to create a collage with words that related to me as a musician and that also related to the photos chosen. The main four words I decided to use in my collage were: appreciative, open minded, expressive and ambitious. I used a photo of my sisters holding me as a baby with the word 'appreciative' as I appreciated them encouraging me to sing as I was growing up and I am also appreciative as a musician towards other music. The word 'open minded' was used in my collage alongside a picture of one of my favorite places where I feel I can see the world differently. I am also open minded as an artist when it comes to songwriting and being open to other people's musical ideas. As a performer, the clothes I wear relate to the type of music I sing/play so I used the word 'expressive' which also relates to my song writing and how I express my feelings/experiences through my lyrics. Finally, the word 'ambitious' was used next to a logo of the Bluebird in Nashville which is a famous venue for country artists. Everyone has ambitions in life and as a musician this is one that i would love to be able to achieve.

Here is a photo of my piece of art I made it from modelling wire and hair beads. the original image i worked from (below) was one i found online i didn't include the heart trace lines but they for me represent how music is a therapy and it keeps me going. the wire represents guitar strings which is my second instrument and the beads are a memory of when i had dreadlocks i would always wear hair beads and the way i do my hair when performing is always a big part of my outfit because i think my physical appearance on stage is important to help me feel confident. the treble and bass clef represent my vocals. I tend to sing alto but also really like to use my lower range as well and in terms of music i listen to i love to hear sub bass when i go to a dub night, for example, i often just stand next to the speakers and enjoy the feeling of the bass. and final quite an obvious point is the fact that the two clefs make a heart is just for the fact that i absolutely love music and it has been my passion for years.

Next Session: Don't Forget!

For next session I asked you to create a piece of 'art' and upload it to the Google Drive folder.  This can be anything that you feel captures your musical identity.  Come prepared with an explanation behind your choice!

Your second task was to attempt to write your life story in a day, yes a day! We will not be reading them out but you will be asked to analyse them as part of the session so bring them as a print out or have them on your tablets and phones.

Welcome!

Welcome to the Music Identity blog!  This area is a space for students to share research they have found, reflections on class work and showcase their ideas and 'works in progress'.  As the host of the site, I will as students for contributions at various points in the module.  All students are required to contribute at least once over the course of the module to demonstrate their engagement in the discourse around identity and creative and artistic practice.

I am really looking forward to getting to know you all and starting on our musical journey together.
